Personal Statement

I fell in love with the game of volleyball while watching my big sister play as a toddler.  I started playing volleyball at the age of 5 years old.  I am currently a four year Varsity starter, 2 years in NC and 2 years in GA, where I am currently a member of the GHSA 6A 2022 All-Regional 1st team. In my free time, I like to cook, bake, Paint, draw, and express myself through art. Action and horror movies are my favorites.  I’m also a  gym shoe and sports car junky.  I enjoy helping people when possible and being myself.  I gravitate to people who are respectful, open-minded, kind-hearted, and hard-working which aligns with what I strive to be every day.  My GPA  is not something that I'm proud of and I know that I'm more than capable of accomplishing any work that is presented to me. My freshman and sophomore years were filled with a family crisis and the pandemic which traumatized me mentally and really took a toll on my GPA.  COVID-19 hit midway through my freshman year and all of my sophomore year. I was having a really hard time adjusting to learning from a computer screen 6 hours a day! Adjusting to these new school changes wasn't the only thing that I was dealing with at the time, a family emergency required my father to move across the country to CA to help my brother with a life-changing disability.  All of these events took me into a mental state that I wasn't able to overcome. So needless to say, it was a struggle for me to maintain focus in school and strive to do my best when so much had changed within a couple of months. With the help of my family, personal growth, maturity, and an environment change, my grades have returned to the A-B honor roll level.  I love my family. They are the source that motivates me to achieve my goal of becoming a Forensic scientist.

Tactical Abilities - 92 / 100 Reading The Game - Does well seeing the play before it happens and reading the other team to help put herself in a good position on the court. Scrimmage Play - Play was elevated in team activities. Great understanding of your roles and responsibilities within a team. Physical Abilities - 95 / 100 Explosiveness - Great quickness and explosiveness, especially in the first step or two. This will be an asset in all aspects of the game Vertical Leap - Showed a good vertical. Great job with footwork and ability to go get the ball. Mental Abilities - 89 / 100 Competitiveness - Showed a strong desire to win and seems to enjoy the competition. Keep working hard! Confidence - Great confidence, didn’t shy away when challenged at camp and played with a sense of urgency. Coach's Comments Great attitude and a pleasure to work with at camp. De'nyla brings positive energy to every session. Her knowledge of the game and work ethic stand out. Her awareness on the court and athleticism shine in her blocking and net play. She did a great job jumping and terminating many solid shots from the outside. As a 2023 grad, she still has time to develop physically and has the potential to become elite volleyball player. She has a bright volleyball career ahead of her. Reading the angles will help you anticipate where the attacker will hit the ball. College attackers will change their shots, so you must have very fast reading ability. Maximizing your attack reach is very important in the college game. High contact, work on tooling the block, turning a solid line shot and attacking the hard angle will improve your attacking termination shots! At the college block is very high, so it is important to develop many termination shots. A fast open transition lets you see the set and find an angle to attack. This is a skill that is important in the college game, many hitters attack the setter and the libero must play an out-of-system ball. A great outside must terminate attack; in-system or out-of-system.
